Y'see that golden door down there? Nooo... don't go that way. Go to the right. There is a (insert suitable four-letter word here) big button on the wall - when you press that, you have 'found' yourself a 'secret'. Pretty lame, IMHO.

Now you are down in the hole... Jump up on the wooden platform, and down again in a hurry. When it rises, a slipgate is found underneath.

That's more like it.
